ALPINE NEWT SUBSPECIES


The Alpine Newt, Triturus alpestris, is widely distributed across Europe, being absent only from the British Isles, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean islands. Accordingly it has a large number of subspecies.

Scientific Name Distribution Notes
T. a. alpestris Central, W & E Europe, some parts of the Balkan peninsula and N Italy (Julian and Lepontine Alps) Nominate subspecies. .
T. a. apuanus France, Italy (both countries mainly the Alps regions. esp. NW Tuscany)  
T. a. cyreni Spain (NW inc. SW Pyrenees, C Spain, Cantabrian mtns and Sierra de Guadarrama in Segovia)  
T. a. inexpectatus S Italy  
T. a. lacusnigri Triglav mtns of former W Yugoslavia, inc. Slovenia  
T. a. montenegrinus Montenegro & former E Yugoslavia Neotenic form.
T. a. piperianus Montenegro Neotenic form. Found at slightly higher altitudes than T. a. montenegrinus but otherwise closely related: subspecies designation of both forms has been questioned.
T. a. reiseri Bosnia Partly neotenic form.
T. a. serdarus Durmitor mtns of former Yugoslavia and Montenegro Found at lower altitudes than montenegrinus and piperianus: subspecies status confirmed genetically.
T. a. veluchiensis Veluchi mountains in C Greece as far as NE Peloponnese
