Periodical Index - Snakes of the Viperidae family

A guide to viperid snake articles appearing in herpetogical periodicals over the past few years


Viperid snakes include vipers, pitvipers, rattlesnakes and adders (but, confusingly, not the “adders” of Australia, which actually belong to the Elapidae). Most of Europe's and North America's venomous snakes fall into this category. For cobras, mambas, kraits, Australia's venomous snakes and the sea snakes, see the Elapidae article page.

It should be emphasised that most of the articles listed below are on the natural history of the animals, not their captive care, although some do cover responsible keeping of some species. Keeping venomous snakes carries risks somewhat akin to owning certain types of dog and in addition usually requires a special licence or authorisation from the law.
