Last updated 6 February 2015: added separate section for History.
The following pages are really more than just books and writers, but are a way of looking at issues, ideas and events raised by the written word. Even more than films, books often convey an underlying philosophy or belief, even in the most inncuous story. That's not to say that we can't appreciate fiction as fiction without looking for some hidden meaning - some books are written purely as entertainment and should be taken as such. Yet even fiction often makes certain assumptions about people, politics and the world.
