Periodical Index - True Toads

A guide to bufonid (toad) articles appearing in herpetogical periodicals over the past few years

The following is a guide to anuran-related articles that have appeared within herpetological magazines within the last few years. It is an ongoing project, ie I am effectively cataloguing these entries myself from the actual magazines, some of which are harder to get hold of than others (especially when they are no longer being published!). I hope however that some people will find it useful, especially if researching a single species or looking for some care guidance.

Some South American species may be referred to as Bufo in some accounts and Chaunus or Rhinella in others. We have listed them usually as described in the article, but the reader should be aware of their synonymity (ie they are usually one and the same thing!). Recently there has been much reclassification of the Bufonidae, and particularly some species listed in older literature as Bufo species may now be referred to other genera, including European species (eg Epidalea calamita and Bufotes viridis, formerly both Bufo species).

The Megophrys and their relatives (so-called "Asian toads") formerly listed here have now been removed to a separate index.

2025 update

In the twenty-first century the size of the genus Bufo has been considerably reduced as many species formerly considered Bufo were reassigned to new genera. For this reason if you cannot find a Bufo species listed in this index, check particularly under the genera Bufotes, Epidalea, Firouzophrynus, Incilius, Ingerophryne, and especially Rhinella (for toads in the New World) and Sclerophrys (for African toads). Many South American toads including the Cane Toad were considered Chaunus or Rhamphophryne species for a few years, but these genera are now invalidated and considered Rhinella.
