Added 13 March 2014.
A small genus restricted to SE Asia and centred on China.
The species was originally considered a part of the large genus Tropidonotus before being reassigned in the twentieth century to Natrix, and finally in the 1970s to Sinonatrix. Rossman and Eberle give the characteristics of the genus as follows: 2n = 42 chromosomes, consisting of 6 pairs of acrocentric macrochromosomes, 3 pairs of meta- or subcentric macrochromosomes, and 12 pairs of microchromosomes; dorsal scales in 19 rows; two pairs of anterior temporals; anal plate divided; unkeeled subcaudals; palatine and supertemporal bones normal; hemipenis moderately bilobed with simple sinistral sulcus and the nude apical area not very extensive.
I have not heard of this snake being kept by hobbyists.
